Our Team
Angella Cress-Kuryga Executive Director
Angella has always had a special respect for first responders and military personnel. She supports local groups who provide assistance to these heroes and has served on the Schererville 911 Memorial Committee since 2019.
When her younger son became a fireman, she came to understand some of the special needs unique to these groups during difficult times.
“First responders and military personnel risk their safety and lives for people they’ve never met. In turn, it is our responsibility to take care of those who take care of us.”
After much soul searching and research, she found a productive, positive way to assist, and created Kona’s Healing Paws.
Mary Pierzchalski Chief Governance Officer (CGO)
Mary’s background includes a BSN in nursing with over 40 years experience. Her service in the healing community extends beyond human needs as she is a die-hard animal lover and has done volunteer work at a local animal control.
“I’m blessed to have the opportunity to combine my compassion for those who are hurting, with my love for animals.”
As CGO, she looks forward to the opportunity to assist with the sustainability and growth of Kona’s Healing Paws.
Cole Cress Assistant Director
Cole graduated from the fire academy in 2022 and has seen first hand the effects of witnessing extreme trauma. Understanding the comfort and healing that comes from the canines in his own life, he saw the potential in Kona’s Healing Paws.
Having the opportunity to be Kona’s handler for KHP allows him to assist his comrades in the first responder community.
“Kona’s a good girl and I know she will bring healing to anyone who needs it.”
In the future, Cole plans to expand his service by becoming a canine officer.
Makenzie Owsley Social Media Director
Makenzie has been a part of Kona’s journey since the beginning of KHP. She is excited to document Kona's path to becoming a certified therapy dog. Makenzie has a great respect for first responders and a special place in her heart for all animals. In January of 2024 she took on another role as a 911 dispatcher for Lake County Indiana.
“Kona is so sweet and she knows when she is needed. I am excited and nervous about my new career as a dispatcher, but know Kona will bring me comfort on hard days.”
